Anthony Joseph “Joe” Genaro (born on the 15th of October 1962 Wagontown, Pennsylvania) is an American musician and songwriter popular as the co-lead guitarist and vocalist in the punk-rock band The Dead Milkmen. Based within Philadelphia, Genaro has performed in a variety of bands, including punk and indie rock which include The Low Budgets, and is also an artist on his own.

Other groups with which Genaro has played are The Ornamental Wigwam (circa 1987 and a duo together with Dead Milkmen bassist Dave Schulthise), Touch Me Zoo (1990-1997), The Town Managers (1996-2000), The Fresh Breaths (2000), The Low Budgets (2000-2008), Ukebox (circa 2006) and No! Go! Tell! (2009). The majority of the time, he is a guitarist. Genaro is also a bass guitarist (in the cases of Town Managers, and Ukebox) as well as the organ (in cases of low Budgets) in the groups. Genaro has also been a part of numerous recordings at home, including Jiffy Squid (circa 1993), We’re Not From Idaho (circa 1995), Sock (1993-1998) and The Cheesies (circa 2003-present).

In 2005, the Virginia-based Valiant Death label released a CD of material from Genaro’s cassettes, Home Recordings 1984–1997. Under the name Joe Jack Talcum, he released Photographs from the Shoebox, a split LP/CD with Mischief Brew, in 2008 on Fistolo Records. The next year, his Live in the Studio album was released on CD and digital download formats. This record featured Genaro backed by a drummer and slide guitar/banjo player. Genaro also frequently tours behind his solo material.

The group’s debut album, Big Lizard in My Backyard was released in 1985. the band’s first 12 years of existence saw some radio stations at college and MTV successes, including the their singles “Bitchin’ Camaro” (1986) and “Punk Rock Girl” (1988). Genaro played the role of the band’s guitarist, co-lead vocalist and co-songwriter, and also performed on piano and keyboards. The group was initially disbanded in 1995 before reuniting in.

Genaro has recorded a steady stream of songs by himself since the mid 1980s. Between 1984 between 1984 and 1999 Genaro self-released eight cassettes containing songs he recorded at home. The group of four members Butterfly Joe, named after Genaro’s pseudonym and including Dead Milkmen drummer Dean Sabatino formed to play Genaro’s solo songs. The group released their self- titled all-embracing album with Razler Records in 1999, but then went on a suspension shortly afterward.

The Dead Milkmen properly formed 1983 following an album of home recordings with an esoteric backstory that Genaro began in 1979. The band members frequently used pseudonyms, and Genaro often referred to himself as “Joe Jack Talcum” (stemming from the character Jack Talcum that Genaro had imagined as the band’s leader according to their mythology) within his role as a member of the group. However, Genaro also used names “Butterfly Fairweather” and “Jasper Thread” on certain albums.

After the 2004 death of Schulthise, the three surviving members of The Dead Milkmen reunited for two concerts, joined by Low Budgets bassist Dan Stevens. In 2008, the band properly reformed with Stevens as a full-time member, and began performing sporadic concerts and working on new material, resulting in the 2011 album The King in Yellow.
