Crespino is the writer of two works as well as an edited collection. He was named one of the Top Young Historian by the History News Network at George Mason University.
Crespino is an associate professor of history in the history department at Emory University in Atlanta, where is the Jimmy Carter Chair in American History. He was awarded an Undergraduate Teacher Award at the center for teaching and Curricular Excellence in 2009. His wife is a Mississippi-born singer and songwriter Caroline Herring.
Crespino is the author of Strom Thurmond’s America (Hill and Wang, 2012), a political biography of the longtime U.S. Senator from South Carolina.), The book received positive reviews from Doris Kearns Goodwin and Publishers Weekly.
The book he co-authored, In Search of Another Country: Mississippi and the conservative counterrevolution (Princeton 2007) was awarded the award in 2008: The Lillian Smith Book Award by the Southern Regional Council, the McLemore Prize for the best Mississippi History Book, and the prize for nonfiction given to the Mississippi Institute of Arts and Letters. He also co-edited along with Matthew Lassiter a book of essays entitled The Myth of Southern Exceptionalism (Oxford in 2010).

Crespino was born within Macon, Mississippi. He was the son of Bobby Crespino, played football at the University of Mississippi and then later joined the NFL. Crespino was a student at Central Academy in Macon from 1977 until 1985. He also attended The McCallie School in Chattanooga, Tennessee, from 1986 until 1990 and Northwestern University (1990-1994), where he graduated with the degree of bachelor of arts. He graduated with the MEd at The University of Mississippi in 1996 and a Ph.D. in 2002 from Stanford University in 2002.
From 1994 until 1996, Crespino was part in the Mississippi Teacher Corps, where he taught 11th grade American History in Gentry High School in Indianola, Mississippi.
In 2018 he published a book on Atticus Finch, a main character in the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee.
