Villarin was born in Manila on the 30th of January 1960. He attended Ateneo de Manila University for his undergraduate studies. He earned the degree of bachelor of Science in Physics, Magna Cum Laude and graduated in 1980 as the class valedictorian. Then, he joined the Society of Jesus, and received philosophical credit at Ateneo de Manila graduate school as prerequisites to seminary theology. He later was a student at The Loyola School of Theology, an affiliated unit of Ateneo de Manila, and earned his Master in Sacred Theology, summa cum laude in the year 1985. He continued his graduate studies at America. United States, receiving a Master of Science in physics from Marquette University in 1987, and a Ph.D. for atmospheric Physics from the Georgia Institute of Technology in 1997.

Villarin who’s work on greenhouse emissions has earned his membership on the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change He was awarded the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize together with the group made up of climate researchers. The prize is also shared by the former US Vice President Al Gore.

In 2011, he became the president of Ateneo de Manila University.

He was elected president in 2005. was appointed president of Xavier’s University-Ateneo de Cagayan. He also became an official member of the Board of Trustees of the Ateneo de Manila University in 2009. He is also an officer on the boards of trustees for the Ateneo de Davao University, the Ateneo de Naga University, and the Ateneo de Zamboanga University.
