The pitcher made his MLB debut in the year 2017. Prior to making his professional debut, Montgomery played college baseball for the South Carolina Gamecocks. On May 1st in 2018 Montgomery quit a game with The Houston Astros after one inning because of tightness in his elbow, which put him on an inactive list following day due to a flexor strain and it was reported that it would take him for 6-8 weeks. But on June 5th, it was revealed that Montgomery injured his collateral ligament ulnar throwing on a flat surface during rehab just a few days prior to the game and would be undergoing Tommy John surgery, ending his season. In his six appearances in 2018 Montgomery ended up with a 2-0 record and an impressive 3.62 ERA.
Montgomery was given a non-roster invite to the spring season in 2017 and was a candidate for a spot as part of their Opening Day starting rotation. After starting the season at Triple-A for the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders, the Yankees promoted Montgomery to the major leagues on April 12, 2017. For his debut in the major leagues in the game against Tampa Bay Rays Tampa Bay Rays, Montgomery was given a no-decision, because he allowed 3 runs (two gained) in four and a third innings and struck out seven. The 17th of April the second Major League game, Montgomery earned his first major league victory against his team, the Chicago White Sox. In June 9’s game against Baltimore Orioles Baltimore Orioles, Montgomery pitched a career-high seven innings , and pitched a career-high eight batters. Montgomery also matched those same records during a start on June 26 in the White Sox. Before the All-Star Break, Montgomery pitched to an impressive 3.65 ERA, striking out more than 87 batters over 91/3 innings. The 25th of July in the match against his team, the Cincinnati Reds, Montgomery took a no-hitter through the sixth inning after which Scott Schebler hit a double to stop the bid. On August 6 the team was sent to Triple-A. He was called back on August 11, after CC Sabathia suffered a knee injury. On August 12th, Montgomery was struck in the head by an unintentional foul ball while batting when he was signing autographs prior to the game. He was not severely injured. In the course of his 29 starts in 2017 Montgomery ended up with a 9-7 record , and an 3.88 ERA.

Montgomery was a student at Sumter High School at Sumter, South Carolina. He was a member of the team of the school’s baseball team as well as being named South Carolina’s athlete of the year in his senior year. Montgomery is enrolled as a student at the University of South Carolina, and played in the college baseball of the South Carolina Gamecocks baseball team. He was awarded the Southeastern Conference Freshman of the Week on April 9, 2012 and was named a Freshman All American.
