Venters was selected in the Atlanta Braves in the 30th round of the 2003 Major League Baseball Draft out of Lake Brantley High School. He made his debut as a member of the Rookie League GCL Braves in 2004. In 2004, Venters played in eight games and played 11 in all, going 1-6 with an 5.74 ERA and 3 saves. The year 2005 was the time Venters moved to the Class-A Rome Braves. With 23 appearances (12 games that started), Venters had an 8-6 record, and an 3.93 ERA. After having Tommy John surgery in late 2005, Venters missed the entire 2006 season.
In 2007 Venters made the move to the Class-A Advanced Myrtle Beach Pelicans. He played during 17 of the games (12 starts) and was 3-3 with an 3.39 ERA and 1 save. Venters was moved all the way into the Rookie League level to begin the 2008 season. He registered an 4.70 ERA in 4 starts. He was promoted to Class A Advanced where he posted 2-3 with an 4.08 ERA in 5 games (3 starts). Venters was then moved into the Double-A Mississippi Braves, where he ended the season one-for-one with an 1.00 ERA in 3 games (2 starts). In the entire 2008 season, Venters posted a 3.41 ERA and one save and a 2-2 mark in 12 games played across 3 affiliates. Venters began his 2009 campaign at Double-A, registering an overall record of 4-4 in 12 starts , with an 2.76 ERA. Venters was promoted to Triple-A Gwinnett Braves, where he was 4-7 and an 5.62 ERA in 17 starts. Together with each of the Minor League levels in 2009, Venters went 8-11 in 29 games, and an 4.42 total ERA.
On July 17, 2010, in a game against the Milwaukee Brewers, Venters was deemed to have intentionally thrown at Brewers first baseman Prince Fielder. He was ejected from the game along with Braves manager Bobby Cox and later suspended four games, a decision which Venters later appealed. Venters’ suspension was subsequently overturned.

After the season, Venters signed a one-year deal with the Braves for the 2014 season, thereby avoiding arbitration. Venters began the 2014 season on the 60-day disabled list while recovering from surgery, enduring many setbacks in the process. On August 28, 2014, Venters learned he had torn his ulnar collateral ligament again and would need a third Tommy John surgery to continue his baseball career. The third procedure was performed in September 2014, and prevented Venters from pitching in 2015.
