Jonathon Gregory Blum (born 30th January 1989) is an American professional hockey player, who is currently playing for Farjestad BK of the Swedish Hockey League (SHL).
Blum made his international debut with Team USA at the 2006 Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament in the Czech Republic and Slovakia. He won an Olympic silver medal in the event, even though Team United States lost to Canada in the final. A year later Blum competed at the 2008 World Junior Championships in the Czech Republic, finishing fourth in Team USA. He was scheduled to participate in the 2009 World Junior Championships in Ottawa, Blum was named team captain for his country, the United States. He scored two goals and two assists over six games, but was unsuccessful in winning an award, coming in fifth position. He then representing by the United States at the 2018 Winter Olympics.
After being sent back to junior from the Predators’ training camp in September 2007, Blum was signed to an entry-level contract with Nashville on December 17, 2007. Earlier that month, on December 2, he set a Giants’ franchise record with four assists in a 6–1 win over Portland Winter Hawks. One of the Giants’ alternate captains along with forward Garet Hunt, he finished the season with career-highs of 18 goals and 63 points, finishing second among league defensemen (behind Ty Wishart’s 67 points in 72 games). His offensive production also set a single-season franchise-record among Giants defensemen for goals (surpassed by Kevin Connauton in 2009–10) and points (surpassed by Brent Regner in 2008–09). At the end of the season, he was named to the WHL West Second All-Star Team, along with teammate Tyson Sexsmith.
He was selected by the Predators 23rd overall in the 2007 NHL Entry Draft. Turning professional in 2009, he spent parts of three seasons with the Predators’ minor league affiliate, the Milwaukee Admirals of the American Hockey League (AHL), before joining the Predators. Internationally, Blum has represented Team USA on four occasions. He won silver at the 2006 Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament, and has competed in the 2008 and 2009 World Junior Championships, finishing without a medal both times. He also competed at the 2018 Winter Olympics, once again failing to medal.
Blum was born in Long Beach, California, to parents John and Dana. A keen surfer in his youth at Rancho Santa Margarita, approximately 40 miles south to Long Beach, Blum was initially playing roller hockey for fun when he was 4 before finding ice hockey after a few years. Blum played in the minor leagues in his team, the California Wave, a team that was led by Jeff Turcotte, younger brother of the former NHL athlete Alfie Turcotte. Because of the absence of top minor hockey tournaments in California The team made trips into Canada in to Canada as well as the Northeast United States to play in elite tournaments. The 134th pick in the 2004 WHL Bantam Draft, Blum was a rookie as a member of The Vancouver Giants of the WHL in the 2005-06 season, scoring 24 points in his rookie season. Blum added eight points in the postseason which helped the Giants to win the President’s Cup as WHL champions as well as a spot for the 2006 Memorial Cup in Moncton, where they placed third. The following season, 2006-07 Blum scored 51 points in the period when the Giants set out for defending the WHL title as the 2007 Memorial Cup hosts. With a league-leading plus-minus of +37 and the Plus-Minus award from WHL. Blum was also a part of The CHL Top Prospects Game along with teammates Tyson Sexsmith, Michal Repik and Spencer Machacek. In the months leading up to the first camp he attended in Vancouver and still a student of Trabuco Hills High School The house where his family lived was destroyed by an uncontrolled gas leak on the 2nd of April 2004 and killed Blum’s twin sister Ashley. Blum has two half-siblings remaining with an older brother and sister. After a short time his mother’s diagnosis, she had been diagnosed with a type of cancer that is juvenile, which almost led Blum to decide not to relocate to Vancouver in order to be near his family however, he listened to her advice to stay on his journey in hockey. Blum underwent heart surgery as well as chemotherapy to beat the cancer before May.
Blum was born in Long Beach, California and grew up in Rancho Santa Margarita, California. During his major junior career with the Vancouver Giants of the Western Hockey League (WHL), Blum helped the club to a President’s Cup as WHL champions in 2006 and a Memorial Cup as Canadian Hockey League (CHL) champions in 2007. Blum appeared in his first NHL game on the night of his first call-up, registering a -1 plus-minus rating in 16 minutes of ice time; the Predators lost 4–0 to the Columbus Blue Jackets.
