Nossiter was born into an Jewish household in the United States in 1961, the son of Washington Post and New York Times foreign correspondent Bernard Nossiter. He was born throughout France, England, Italy, Greece and India. He took painting classes in the Beaux Arts in Paris and at the San Francisco Art Institute, in addition to Ancient Greek at Dartmouth College (Phi Beta Kappa senior fellow.) After working as an assistant director at the theater situated in England (The Newcastle Playhouse; King’s Head), the actor moved into New York where he landed the job of moving furniture in the office for the film Fatal Attraction, which led to an appointment as assistant to Director Adrian Lyne for the length of the film’s shoot.

Jonathan Nossiter (born 1961) is an American filmmaker from the United States.

It was during filming that Nossiter was introduced to Quentin Crisp, who later was the main character in his debut feature film Resident Alien, a hybrid documentary and fiction film that also features John Hurt and Holly Woodlawn. It was released theatrically in 1991 following its premiering during The Berlin as well as the Toronto Film Festivals. Resident Alien, which he directed, wrote and produced it is a humorous portrayal of the fading times of the New York’s bohemian underground. It was released as a DVD release in the US in a version that included the sequel, a twinned version of Losing The Thread, a comedy about art-world follies and the victory of the tourism industry at Florence, Italy. His feature film Sunday (1997) that was produced by him and Alix Madigan, co-wrote and directed with James Lasdun, and also directed, received an award at Sundance Film Festival’s Grand Jury Prize for Best Film as well as the Waldo Salt prize for the Best Screenplay as well as The Deauville Film Festival’s Grand Prize for Best Film as well as their International Critics’ Award, and also an appearance of Un Certain Regard in Cannes. The film, which starred David Suchet, Sunday is an edgy romantic comedy that explores the difficulties for an unemployed IBM employee who is poor in Queens and his fairytale romantic love affair that happens one day with an older actress.
