Lujan was born at Littleton, Colorado before joining the United States Marine Corps in 1993. He was discharged with honor in 1997. In that year, he came back to Colorado to take on more responsibility in his parenting of his child Emily. Following the terrorist attacks on September 11th 2001, he reenlisted as a member of the Marine Corps and was subsequently posted to Kuwait to support Operation Iraqi Freedom. In the initial battle on the ground, Lujan was injured when he was riding behind a vehicle . He suffered two disc ruptures on his lower back. The complications of the surgery led to the paralysis of both of his legs. He was medically removed from his position in the Marine Corps in 2006 due to these injuries.
In 2008, Lujan was a participant in at the National Disabled Veterans Winter Sports Clinic during which he was introduced racing by a coach known as Scott Olson. He continued for the next 3 years competing in ski racing for the National Sports Center for the Disabled in Winter Park, Colorado. After realizing that to compete more, the only way to do that was to go full-time and in the year 2011, Lujan left his job and relocated into Aspen, Colorado to ski for the Aspen Valley Ski and Snowboard Club (AVSC). In his first year of racing full-time, Lujan was able to win the two National Championship titles in Downhill and Super Giant Slalom on his home slope in Aspen.
Lujan was named to the 2013–2014 US Paralympic National B Team, and was a member of the 2014 Winter Paralympics US alpine skiing team. Lujan also writes a blogs about his experiences as a professional athlete on the Team USA website as a winter athlete. Lujan is represented by Heather Novikis of Octagon Action Sports.
