Jon Matlack is one of the most popular and richest Baseball Player who was born on January 19, 1950 in West Chester, Pennsylvania, United States. Matlack was the son of Ralph Russell Matlack Jr. (April 15, 1926 in West Chester, Pennsylvania-February 2, 1969 in West Chester, PA) and Marcella Ruth Trumpbour (May 12, 1923 in Saugerties, New York-December 20, 2016 in Glenmoore, Pennsylvania). The couple got were married on July 5, 1947 at Saugerties, New York, and he was blessed with four younger brothers: Deborah, Gail, Timothy and Andrew. Following the death of his father in the year 1969, his mother got married again with Joseph R. Vogel (1920-2007) with three kids from an earlier wedding: Kenneth, Richard and Landa.
A rhomboid injury in Jerry Koosman opened a spot for a left-handed pitcher in the Mets in the starting rotation of this season. Matlack made his debut in the major leagues with the Cincinnati Reds in the second game of the doubleheader on the 11th of July and was on the winning side when he left the field in the seventh inning. But his Mets bullpen (including an blown save by Tom Seaver) was unable to get the win as Matlack received a no-decision during his debut to the major leagues.
He was equally impressive in the 1973 World Series, giving up just three hits in six innings in game one of the World Series, however, the Oakland A’s scored two runs on a Félix Millán error in the third, and held on for the 2–1 victory. He won game four, giving up just one run in eight innings. However, he lost the seventh and decisive game of the series 5-2; in the third inning of that game, he gave up two-run home runs to both Bert Campaneris and Reggie Jackson—the only two home runs Oakland hit during the Series.
Matlack’s record dipped to 14–16 in 1973, however, he was 5–1 from August 18 on, helping the Mets capture the National League East crown. Perhaps his most memorable moment with the Mets occurred on October 7, 1973 when he held the “Big Red Machine” to just two hits in Game 2 of the 1973 National League Championship Series. Both hits were by reserve outfielder Andy Kosco.
His rise to stardom started in 1968, when he was a player for his team, the Raleigh-Durham Mets. Matlack recorded a 13-6 record with an impressive 2.76 Earned Run Average and 188 strikeouts across 173 pitches pitched. Along with fellow southpaws Charlie Hudson and Jerry Bark Matlack was a key player in leading in the Mets towards an impressive 83-56 win and was the first team to be ranked on the Carolina League Eastern Division. His climb up the ranks was evident in the year 1969 when he scored 14-7 and led the Triple-A Tidewater Tidewater Tides to winning the International League championship.
