Jon Ludvig Nilssen Hammer (born 2 June 1990) is a Norwegian Chess Grandmaster and 3 times Norwegian Chess Champion. He was the primary second player for Magnus Carlsen in the World Chess Championship 2013.
Hammer was the first winner of the Norwegian Chess Championship in 2013 in which he scored 7/9 (+5-0=4). Hammer’s previous best performance was in 2008’s championship, in which he came at the same point as Frode Elsness however, his playoff loss in September in the playoff to Elsness having lost the first game before settling for drawing in a lower situation in the following. The 2013/14 season saw Hammer won a clear first-place finish with 7 1/2/9 for the Rilton Cup.
In 2011 Hammer had setbacks during his “B” section of the Tata Steel Chess Tournament, as well as the Aeroflot Open. He bounced back with a great score at the Reykjavik Open, where he was ranked 7/9 with 5th place in tiebreaks. In 2007 Hammer had completed all the requirements for his International Master title. Hammer was awarded the first GM norm at the Cappelle-la-Grande Open in 2007, and the second one to be in Denmark the following year, as well as then a third place in the European Chess Club Cup later in the year. The brief duration of these tournaments however meant Hammer needed to win an additional norm in order to earn his GM title. The norm was fulfilled by the time Hammer took home in a jubilee event in Gjovik which was held between the end of 2008 and at the start of the year. In the final game against Mateusz Bartel Hammer was able to secure his Grandmaster title through a draw. However Hammer resisted numerous opportunities to take a perpetual test, and took a successful shot on the sole first spot. He received the title grandmaster at the end of March in 2009.
Hammer was a student at in the Norwegian College of Elite Sport and was instructed by Agdestein. Hammer was stated to be taking his chess serious, and often playing online, at tournaments, or simply practicing. The year 2009 was the time that Hammer stated that he wouldn’t pursue a career in chess and that he was going to pursue a degree in economics. He then shifted to writing in the field of journalism, working to Science Nordic as part of his studies for his master’s degree.
