John Yau is one of the most popular and richest Screenwriter who was born on June 5, 1950 in Lynn, United States. Based on Matthew Rohrer’s biography about Yau of Poets & Writers Magazine, Yau’s parents moved to Boston after they emigrated to China around 1949. His father was an accountant. As a youngster, Yau was close to the son of Chinese-born abstract artist John Way. In the 1960s, Yau experienced “a lot of anti-war poetry readings in Boston [and] so I’d heard Robert Bly, Denise Levertov, Galway Kinnell, people like that. I don’t know – Robert Kelly (poet) just seemed a different kind of poet. Mysterious, in a way. He was interested in the occult, in gnosticism and abstract art – things that had a particular appeal to me.” According to Rohrer Yau’s choice to go to Bard College was motivated by his admiration for Kelly.

John Yau is descendant of the Zhang family from Nanxun, China, as mentioned in Nelson and Laurence Chang’s book “The Zhangs of Nanxun” (2010). Yau’s maternal grandfather was the scientist Zhang Naiyan (1894-1958) had the distinction of having a PhD in Chemistry from the University of Geneva. In 1927 at the age 33, he was the first president of the University of Nanjing and, in 1933, he was named China’s Ambassador to Belgium. As is evident on the family tree found in the Chang and Chang book Zhang Naiyan’s father, was an educator. Zhang Bianqun (1875-1922) was the older cousin of Zhang Jing Jiang (Zhang Renjie) (1877-1950) who were part of the East Branch of the family. In the South Family that is part of the Zhang family comprises Zhang Shiming (1871-1928) and the art historian Zhang Congyu (1914-1963) as well as the the writer Nelson Chang (1923-) and his son Laurence Chang (1965-).

Yau was the editor of the Arts at The Brooklyn Rail, from 2007 until 2011, but he left for the editorial directorship of an online publication called Hyperallergic Weekend. He also has an independent press called Black Square Editions, which publishes poetry, translations and fiction. Yau is currently teaching art history and critical theory at the Mason Gross School of the Arts, Rutgers University.
