John Carl Thomson (born October 1st 1973) is a former starting pitcher, who was last a player with the Kansas City Royals of Major League Baseball. He graduated in 1991 from Sulphur High School in Sulphur, Louisiana. He was not drafted out of high school and played at McNeese State University (Lake Charles, Louisiana) in 1992 as well as Blinn Junior College (Brenham, Texas) in 1993. He was drafted by the Colorado Rockies selected him in the seventh round of the amateur draft in June of 1993 and the Rockies made his debut in the major leagues in the Rockies on May 11 in 1997. 2007 marks his 11th big league campaign. Alongside the Rockies and the Texas Rangers, he’s been a part of his team the New York Mets, Texas Rangers, Atlanta Braves and Kansas City Royals and also pitched for Toronto Blue Jays from April through June 2007. Thomson pitched 26 games for The Rockies in 1998. He topped the Rockies’ starting pitchers with an 4.81 ERA. Thomson was out for a month during the season because of an injury to his right middle finger , which could become a frequent issue for him in the following years.
On July 31, 2002, the Rockies and Mets made a trade deadline deal that sent Thomson and outfielder Mark Little to New York for outfielder Jay Payton, relief pitcher Mark Corey and minor leaguer outfielder Robert Stratton. He made nine starts for the Mets, going 2-6 with a 4.31 ERA. For the season, he was 9-14 with a 4.71 ERA in 30 starts.
2002 would be Thomson’s final season with the Rockies and he returned to his pre-injury form. In his first 11 starts for Colorado, he was 6-3 with a 3.86 ERA. With the Rockies unlikely to compete for a National League playoff spot and Thomson a free agent at the end of the season, he became a target of trade talks as the July 31 non-waiver deadline approached. After his final start for Colorado July 23, he was 7-8 with a 4.88 ERA in 21 starts.
In 1999, the season turned out to be not a great one for Thomson. After just six games (five starts) Thomson was 0-5 and had an 11.84 ERA and the Rockies moved him to triple-A Colorado Springs where he didn’t do well (0-2, 9.45 ERA in five appearances). After returning to Triple-A Colorado Springs, he was back with the Rockies on August 14 and was awarded his first victory since September 8 1998, however, he was unable to score another win throughout the remainder of the year. Thomson finished the 1999 season at a minus-one with an 8.04 ERA. After the seasonended, it was found out that Thomson was suffering from a torn labrum (another injury that would return later on in his playing career). Thomson had shoulder surgery on 10 October, and a subsequent surgery the next day to heal his right middle finger, which is prone to blisters. Other than four rehab appearances with his Rockies’ Arizona Rookie League team as well as their Portland Rockies of the short-season one-AA Northwest League in August and September, he was out of the entire 2000 season.

Thomson played during his role as a pitcher in Rockies minor league team of The Arizona Rockies of the Arizona Rookie League in 1993. After five rehabilitation starts at Colorado Springs, he was activated May 12 and made three starts for Colorado before returning to the DL just two weeks later on May 26. This time, he made seven rehabilitation starts for the Sky Sox and returned to the Rockies August 2. He got his first win in more than two years August 19 against Florida. Over his final eight starts, he was 4-0 with a 3.36 ERA and for the season, he was 4-5 with a 4.05 ERA. On the final day of the season, he gave up Rickey Henderson’s 3000th hit.
