Shorthouse also announces select Canucks events in Sportsnet in addition to Hockey Night in Canada when regular announcers for play-by-play aren’t available.
On March 28, 2008 Hughson quit his Canucks play-by-play role at Rogers Sportsnet to take on CBC broadcasts in full-time, which left the position open. The 3rd of June, 2008 the announcement was made that Shorthouse was to take over the post. John is now the caller for all Canucks regional TV matches via Rogers Sportsnet Pacific paired with John Garrett. Since 2014, when Rogers purchased the national TV rights for NHL within Canada, Shorthouse also gets occasionally assignment from the network Sportsnet as well as Hockey Night in Canada.
He was the voice on radio of the Canucks from 1999 to 2000 until 2007-08 and was working with color commentary Tom Larscheid. They switched from the radio station CKNW to CKST at the time the Canucks broadcasting rights were changed in. Shorthouse was often regarded as being the more balanced of the two with his exuberant co-worker Larscheid.

In Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, Shorthouse began his broadcasting career with the local station CKVU-TV in 1993. Shorthouse was one of the anchors on a popular late-night sports program known as Sports Page.
In 1996, when he was still working for CKVU He began his career as a reporter for Canucks pay-per-view broadcasts. He also called his very first NHL hockey match playing the role of play-by play as substitute on the 24th of March in 1998, in the game against New York Islanders. The game was notable as it saw the return of the popular former Canucks Trevor Linden and Gino Odjick for the first time. The following season, after the launch of CTV Sportsnet (now Rogers Sportsnet) the Canucks significantly expanded their local television coverage . Shorthouse was hired to share the role of play-by-play with Hall- of-Famer Jim Robson. Shorthouse also acted as a substitute radio broadcasts in the event that Jim Hughson was assigned to the national Sportsnet broadcasts. In the next season, Robson retired, and Shorthouse became the radio’s permanent play-by-play host, and Hughson made the switch to television full- time.
