John Stephens Peyton (born July 28th 1964) is an American politician and businessman who is currently the president of Gate Petroleum. Peyton was the Mayor for Jacksonville, Florida from 2003 until 2011, when Peyton was succeeded with Alvin Brown. He was the only Republican to be elected to the office in the year 1888. Following his term, he returned to Gate the business of his family succeeding his dad Herb Peyton as the company’s president in January 2012.

Peyton came back to Gate following his departure and was briefly vice president as he got acquainted with Gate’s business operations. Then, in January of 2012 Gate made it clear that John Peyton will replace his father’s position as the president while his father will play an inactive role within Gate’s business.

Peyton was elected as the mayor for Jacksonville on the 23rd of March, 2003. At 38 Peyton had the distinction of being one of the youngest Mayors of the city of Jacksonville within Florida when he was elected. Peyton did well in a Republican primary and defeated sheriff of the county’s Democratic sheriff Nat Glover, for the office in a race that was among the highest priced ever in Jacksonville history. Peyton took office in 2003 and succeeded John Delaney. In 2007 Peyton defeated the community activists Jackie Brown by a margin of more than 50% in order to win another term. Priorities include the solidification of his River Accord, Seeds of Change and his wildly popular young literacy initiative RALLY Jacksonville!, aimed to educate four-year- olds.

A long-time single, Peyton became engaged during his first campaign . He got married Jacksonville doctor Kathryn Pearson on June 1 in 2003. The couple has two children. John Conner, born in 2005 as well as Kent Thomas, born in 2007. Peyton is an Episcopalian.
