John Leslie Pelphrey (born July 18th 1968) is a American NCAA basketball player. He is currently director for the Tennessee Tech Golden Eagles. In 1987, after being named Kentucky Mr. Basketball in 1987, he went on to become a top college athlete in Kentucky’s University of Kentucky.
After having left Kentucky, Pelphrey failed to be selected for the NBA and spent a brief period of professional basketball throughout France in France and Spain before being a part of Eddie Sutton’s team as a coach at Oklahoma State for the 1993-94 season.
Pelphrey spent five seasons as head coach at the University of South Alabama, starting in 2002. In his first season there in 2002-03, Pelphrey led the Jaguars to a 14-14 record but had subsequently bad seasons the next two years, going 12-16 in 2003-04 and then 10-18 in 2004-05. In 2005-06 the Jaguars defeated Western Kentucky University in the Sun Belt Conference tournament championship game, earning USA’s first NCAA tournament bid since 1998. The Jaguars lost to eventual tournament champions, Florida in the round of 64.
After his playing career ended, Pelphrey became as an assistant coach under Eddie Sutton at Oklahoma State University. He was then hired to serve under Billy Donovan at Marshall University and followed him to Florida. Pelphrey took his first head coaching job in 2002, when he was hired by the University of South Alabama, and in 2007 he was chosen to take the head coaching position at the University of Arkansas. After leaving Arkansas, he returned to Florida.
While in Kentucky from 1988 until in 1992 Pelphrey was the team’s leader, leading Kentucky’s Wildcats towards winning the SEC Tournament Championship and an NCAA Tournament appearance, including the epic clash with Duke at the time of the 1992 Elite Eight. Pelphrey was twice captain during his time at Kentucky and, in 1989, received the award of UK student Athlete Of The Year. Through his time at Kentucky, Pelphrey started 90 of his 114 games scoring an average of 11.11 points throughout his entire career. As of 2005, Pelphrey got inducted into Kentucky’s Kentucky Hall of Fame.

John Pelphrey was born in Paintsville, Kentucky. He was a student at Paintsville High School, where the school was coached by Bill Mike Runyon. He was able to lead his team of Tigers through their Sweet Sixteen in the State Tournament and also make it to an appearance in the Sweet Sixteen Fab 50. In his final year as an Tiger (1987) the team’s performance was 32-5. The team was able to win the Paintsville Invitational Championship, the Hillbrook Classic, the 57th District Championship, the 15th Region Championship, and made the KHSAA “Sweet Sixteen” Final Four, which they lost to the eventual state champion Louisville Ballard with the help of the future NBA athlete Allan Houston. A multi-sport athlete, Pelphrey also had a love for baseball. He played in his high school time as a shortstop and an ace pitcher.
In the course of his freshman year, 1988-89 in 1988-89, the UK program was hit by a scandal of a magnitude. A player named Eric Manuel, was identified to be guilty by the NCAA to have received improper support in his college entrance exam. Another participant, Chris Mills, received cash from an individual booster. The scandal caused dismissal of head the coach Eddie Sutton and athletic director Cliff Hagan, and led to severe NCAA sanctions. Pelphrey along with three of his freshmen cohorts, Richie Farmer, Deron Feldhaus, and Sean Woods, stayed with the team despite the sanctions and were incorporated into UK legend throughout their senior season in 1991-92.
In 1996, he followed Donovan from Marshall to Florida and coached as an assistant for 6 years. He helped the Gators garner a school record four straight NCAA Tournament appearances from 1999 to 2002. During the 1999-2000 season, the Gators made their first-ever appearance in the national championship game against Michigan State.
