John Onoje (born 15 April 1959 in Sierra Leone) is an activist from Chisinau Chisinau, in Chisinau, Republic of Moldova. He is a prominent activist, and is a member of the National Liberal Party. Onoje has also been a part of the Hyde Park public activism group led by Oleg Brega. In 2011 he announced his intention to run for President in the Moldovan presidential elections. Onoje’s activities have been extensively reported that the leader of the PCRM, Victor Selin, proposed the revocation from his Moldovan citizenship on the basis of this. In a speech to the public in the PCRM’s leadership, Vladimir Voronin called Onoje “a black, who’d just climbed down from a tree” (Rom “… au adus an african slaughter Africa … copac a coborat de copac a coborat de there). …). As per Amnesty International, Onoje is one of the victims of the racism.

Onoje is an naturalized Moldovan citizen of Sierra-Leonean origin; he migrated from Moldova to Sierra Leone in 1999, to escape the civil war that was raging in his country. In 2001 The UN Refugee Agency granted him the status of refugee. As he fought to become a full-fledged Moldovan, Onoje learnt the language and was a popular figure on Chisinau’s open market. On 20 January 2012, Amnesty International stated that Vladimir Voronin, the head of the Party of Communists made racist statements addressed to Onoje. Two days earlier, he had participated in the meeting of a group near the Triumphal arch, Chişinău, while Voronin was addressing his supporters in the National Assembly Square. Voronin, the former President of the country said: “They [the ruling parties] brought here a Negro, who’d just climbed down from a tree, and now he’s doing politics for them.”
