John O’Donohue (1 January 1956 – 4 January 2008) was an Irish poet and author, priest as well as a Hegelian philosopher. He was an native Irish speaker and, as an author is most well-known for his work in popularizing Celtic spirituality.
The posthumous publication includes The Four Elements, a collection of essays published in 2010, and Echoes of Memory (2011) the first work of poetry originally written in 1994. In March of 2015 an audio recording of conversations that he recorded with his an old friend and fellow RTE journalist John Quinn was collated and released as Walking on the Pastures of Wonder.
Later in life, O’Donohue became a prominent speaker on creativity in the workplace. He consulted executives in the corporate sector “on integrating a sense of soul and of beauty into their leadership and their imagination about the people with whom they work.”
Two days after his birthday, in addition to two years after the release of his final publication, Benedictus: A Book of Blessings O’Donohue was killed unexpectedly in his sleeping on January 4, 2008 during a holiday close to Avignon, France. The exact cause of his death isn’t known by his family members, making non-fiction writers prone to speculate on the reasons for his premature death. Posts and articles have suggested an aneurysm or heart issue and aspiration for possible causes. He is survived by his girlfriend Kristine Fleck and the mother of his Josephine (Josie) O’Donohue, his brothers Patrick (Pat) as well as Peter (PJ) O’Donohue, and his sister Mary O’Donohue.

O’Donohue was ordained a novice in Maynooth located in northern County Kildare, at age of 18. He obtained degrees in English philosophy, Philosophy, and theology from St Patrick’s College in County Kildare. He was ordained as a Catholic priest on June 6, 1979. O’Donohue relocated in Tubingen, Germany in 1986 and finished his dissertation in the year 1990 on German philosopher Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel for his doctorate in philosophical theology from the University of Tubingen. In 1990 the year he came back to Ireland to fulfill his priestly duties and began his postdoctoral studies on the mystic of the 13th century, Meister Eckhart.
O’Donohue’s debut novel Anam Cara (1997) meaning “soul friend” in the Irish language, pushed his career into a more prominent life as a writer, speaker and teacher, primarily within America. United States. O’Donohue was ordained a priest in the year 2000. O’Donohue also dedicated his time to environmental causes, and was recognized for helping to establish an organization called the Burren Action Group that protested against plans to develop the area and eventually preserved the region in Mullaghmore as well as the Burren which is a karst-dominated landscape located in County Clare.
O’Donohue’s last will was held to be invalid by the High Court in December 2011, Justice Gilligan holding that “As a piece of English, the Will is unclear on its face” and that the will was void for uncertainty. The will did not leave anything to his partner Kristine Fleck. In the absence of a valid will his estate devolved on his mother, Josie O’Donohue.
