John Mountney is a central midfielder who joined Dundalk in January of 2012, after having made his League of Ireland debut with Mervue United the previous year.

Despite the overall poor performance of the team during the 2012 season, Mountney was one of the better players and earned a contract with Stephen Kenny for the 2013 season. He scored his first league goal for the club at the 30th attempt with the third in a 3-1 win away to Shelbourne on 15 March 2013. John’s 50th competitive appearance came in the 1-0 win over Sligo Rovers at The Showgrounds on 28 May 2013.

Mountney remained a key member of the side for Dundalk’s three-in-a-row League title success in 2016 and, despite some injury setbacks, won more honours as Dundalk won both the League title and the FAI Cup in 2018 – the club completing its second Double in four seasons. Mountney signed a two-year contract extension at the end of the 2018 season.

Mountney completed his Dundalk debut with a scoreless draw in a match against Monaghan United at Gortakeegan on 2 March 2012. At the FAI Cup on 25 May 2012 Mountney scored his debut goal for the club with a crucial strike during a 1-1 victory against Saint Patrick’s Catholic Youths at Oriel Park.

In all, Mountney made 20 league appearances for Mervue with 17 matches during a time when the Galway club had their best season since they joined this league back in the year 2009 finishing seventh. The team’s performance brought the interest of managers from the Premier Division and he joined Dundalk in January of 2012.

Despite a number of injury problems, Mountney featured in 23 matches in 2013 and found the net on two occasions, helping Dundalk secure second place in the League. He penned new deals committing himself to the club for both the 2014 and 2015 seasons. Playing more games than anyone else in 2015, he added a League and FAI Cup Double to the League and League Cup medals won in 2014. In October 2015, Mountney signed a new contract for the 2016 campaign.
