McFetridge writes gritty, tense crime novels set in the street of Toronto. His novels have been compared with Elmore Leonard’s as well as an author critic Linda Richards of January Magazine noting McFetridge’s voice “colder and starker” than Leonard’s. “McFetridge is one of a new breed of Canadian crime fictionists,” she writes, “building neo noir that is influenced by both the humour and self-consciousness that characterizes living north in the United States of America.. Quill & Quire reviewer Gary Butler was in agreement with the Leonard reviewer, noting the following “both writers seamlessly mix the police procedural with perp procedural to underscore the parallel lives of members of the opposing teams. But where Leonard tends to favour Hollywood- homicide banter, McFetridge keep the quips to a minimum, preferring punch to panache. As a result, the only time his prose gets purple is when fists are flying.”

In an interview with the BBC in 2008, McFetridge said his approach to writing isn’t very planned. “I don’t work out plots or outline or plan too far ahead,” McFetridge stated. “My novels aren’t about mysteries that have an investigation but they’re about ongoing crime. I base my writing on the character and theme. Themes that are very basic. Dirty Sweet is about possibility – how do you explain why some people can see opportunities everywhere while others are unable to notice it? Everyone Knows This Is Nowhere is about how I get to where I am today What characters do I find interested in, and I put them in situations that I believe are interesting and observe the actions they take. Then I look at the next thing they do and after about page 250 I am beginning to think what’s the plan for them? How are they going to come out of this (or not escape from it)?

He graduated in 2002 and finished his Prime Time TV Writing Program at the Canadian Film Centre. He reside in Toronto with his wife Laurie Reid, and their two sons.
