John McFall (born 25 April 1981) is a Cardiff-based British Paralympic sprinter. In 2000, at 19 years old the right side of his leg had been surgically amputated above the knee after an accident on a motorcycle that was fatal. He returned to running after having a prosthesis fitted and took part at his very first event in the year 2004. In the next year, he was chosen as a representative of Great Britain at the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) European Championships and won his bronze in 200m (sport category T42).
McFall went on to spend the following year in his home, during which he took on the sport of mountain biking, climbing, and was an instructor for fitness at the local leisure centre. McFall also began training for a marathon in summer 2003, as soon as his prosthesis was installed: “I love that sound of air rushing past your ears and the freedom of it. I missed that and I wanted to get that back.” When he enrolled as a student at Swansea University to pursue a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) in exercise science and sport and exercise science, he took part in the running track of the university. He was also a member of an athletic club in the area known as that of the Swansea Harriers Athletic Club. But, he found running uncomfortable and difficult as the prosthesis was not designed to be used for that purpose, and often was damaged. After contacting the Federation of Disability Sport Wales (FDSW) the runner was presented with carbon fibre for running “blades”. He graduated from the university with an honours upper second-class degree in the summer of 2004, participating of his very first event at the Disability Sport Events (DSE) Championships in the UK the following year.
At the end of January 2006, two weeks before the Sparkassen Cup in Stuttgart, Germany, McFall’s car was stolen from the car park of the Welsh Institute of Sport where he worked part-time and trained. His customized running prosthesis worth £3,000 was in the boot. Following his appeal for the return of the prosthesis, he received a telephone call from two youths who said they “might be able to recover the lost leg” but asked “What is it worth?” Infuriated, McFall refused to pay anything and asked the youths whether they had considered what being an amputee was like. After McFall agreed to take no further action against them, the youths anonymously returned the prosthesis to the Institute a week later. McFall went on to achieve a personal best of 8.55 seconds in the 60 metres race, and 28.21 seconds in the 200 metres on 4 February.
