Van Bergen and former Minneapolis Police Chief Tony Bouza.) Marty’s own-imposed limits on campaign finances that were feasible for his tiny state Senate reelections made it difficult for him to compete with his rivals in the state. In spite of spending the bulk of his campaign money in the primary campaign the primary, he was defeated by Carlson by a close two-to-one ratio.
When the national Democratic Party was picking their 2004 presidential nominee, Marty joined State Senate Majority Leader John Hottinger in endorsing Congressman Dennis Kucinich of Ohio. On Super Tuesday, Kucinich received 17% of the vote in Minnesota’s presidential caucus, one of his best showings that year. During the 2008 presidential campaign, Marty was a strong supporter of Barack Obama.
On November 7, 2006, Marty was reelected to a sixth term, winning 62.05% of the vote and carrying each of the seven suburbs in his district.

Senator Marty introduced legislation to ensure marriage equality in 2008 and stated publicly that despite the skepticism surrounding the idea, he believed it would pass in five years. Marty (born November 1st 1956) is a senator from the Minnesota Senate and is a representative of District 66 which encompasses parts that comprise Ramsey County in the northern Twin Cities metropolitan area. As a state senator in his early years He ran for Governor of Minnesota in 1994. He was able to win the DFL nomination for the party and also the Democratic primary, but lost in his general race to current governor Arne Carlson.
