He was given an honorary degree from the University of Edinburgh in 2009 and was knighted in December 2012. Leighton is an active board member at the De Pont Museum of Contemporary Art in Tilburg as well as chairman of the Council of Specialists of the Hermitage Amsterdam and an official on the supervisory board of Rijksmuseum located in Amsterdam.
