John Laird is one of the most popular and richest Politician who was born on March 29, 1950 in Santa Rosa, California, United States. John Laird (born March 29 1950) was Secretary of the California Natural Resources Agency from 2011 until 2019 and was an earlier legislator who represented the 27th District within the California State Assembly until 2008. The district comprised areas from Santa Clara County, Santa Cruz County and Monterey County. Laird (along together with Mark Leno) was one of the two first openly gay members to serve as members of the California legislature. Laird was one of United States’ first openly gay mayors in 1983 after he assumed the office of mayor in the town in Santa Cruz, California.
Laird was a founder member of the first founding members of Santa Cruz AIDS Project. He was director-executive for the Santa Cruz AIDS Project from 1991 until 1994.
Laird ran unopposed in the 2002 Democratic primary and easily won election to the California Assembly. Laird served as chair of both the Assembly Budget Committee and the Special Session Committee on Budget Process. He also served on the Judiciary Committee, the Labor and Employment Committee, and the Natural Resources Committee.
Laird ran for the 15th District California State Senate seat previously held by Republican Abel Maldonado, whom Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger named as Lieutenant Governor in November 2009. He lost to Republican state Assemblyman Sam Blakeslee in a special election primary held on June 22, 2010 and subsequently in the runoff election held on August 17, 2010. Laird lost by a 7.59% margin in the primary and a 3.93% margin in the runoff.
As of 1981, Laird was the one who received most votes of eight, and was elected to the Santa Cruz City Council. He was reelected as the highest voter in 1985, and served until the end of term limits for his Council service in the year 1990. His election was by City Council to one-year Mayor’s terms in 1983-84 and 1987-88. While as a member of the Santa Cruz City Council, He worked with the environmental group Save Our Shores to lead local government officials in the battle against offshore oil drilling and favor of the creation for the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary.

Laird was born within Vallejo, California, and was educated at Vallejo the public school system. His parents were both teachers. Laird was a graduate of Adlai Stevenson College of the University of California Santa Cruz in 1972, with an A.B. in Politics , with general college honors, awards of the Board of Politics, and the highest grade on his undergraduate thesis that dealt with the development of water in the past in California.
Laird was a two-year employee as a district staff member of United States Representative Jerome Waldie and was also on the staff during that summer for Rep. Bill Gunter of Florida in his bid in Senate. U.S. Senate. Laird relocated into Santa Cruz, California and became a part of the staff of the Santa Cruz County Administrator in 1974. Later, he was employed in the social and personnel services departments.
Before being elected to the assembly in 2002, Laird served as an elected member of the Cabrillo College Board of Trustees from 1994 to his election to the Assembly in 2002. He was re-elected to the assembly in 2004 and 2006 before being termed out in 2008. While serving the maximum three terms in the Assembly, Laird authored 82 bills that were signed into law.
