Knotwell was elected in the position of Majority Assistant Whip in the 62nd Utah State Legislature. In this role the Representative assists others in the majority-elected leadership in helping create the budget for Utah, discuss priorities between members of the Utah Senate and the Governor’s office and ensure that votes are secured by those in the Utah House of Representatives.
On March 12, 2012 Knotwell made public his plans to pursue the Republican nomination for the Utah House of Representatives. After the 2010, United States Census, the seat currently held by Daniel McCay was redistricted and was made an uncontested seat. Four candidates contested the nomination, and Knotwell took the nomination on the first ballot , securing 76% of votes. The November General Election he won the popular vote and was elected Representative-elect , until January 1st of 2013.
In the 2010 Utah Republican local caucus in 2010, Knotwell was elected as Precinct Chair as well as county Delegate and the State Delegate. Knotwell was a participant in state and county conventions and served up to 2012.In 2011 Knotwell was a candidate for Herriman City Council to represent District 1. Knotwell was not able to defeat his incumbent council member Matt Robinson.

William John Knotwell III (born on January 24 1978) is an American politician from the United States. Knotwell served as an Republican Member of the Utah House of Representatives representing District 52 from January 1, 2013 until October 26, 2019. The district comprises Herriman Western Riverton southwestern South Jordan in the State of Utah.
Knotwell was a graduate of Poway High School located in Poway, California. He was enrolled at Cal State University Northridge for one year of study. At the end of December, 1997 Knotwell made the move to Utah and enrolled as a visit student Brigham Young University. Knotwell was unsuccessful in his efforts to gain full-time admission and later , he enrolled in Utah Valley State College.
