Kitchen has conducted research and recorded the entire organ pieces from Baroque composer Johann Ludwig Krebs (1713-1780). The recordings (on the Priory Records label) were recorded between 2000 and 2001 on a variety of different organs such as that two-manual Frobenius organ from Canongate Kirk, Edinburgh.

Kitchen received Kitchen earned Master of Arts and Bachelor of Music degrees from Glasgow University. He was awarded the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree from the University of Cambridge where he studied 17th century French music for the harpsichord. The doctoral dissertation (approved in 1980) was entitled “Harpsichord music of seventeenth century France: the forms, their origins and developments, with particular emphasis on the work of Louis Couperin (1626-1661)”. While at Cambridge He was an organ scholar at Clare College, and studied the organ alongside Gillian Weir. From 1976 until 1988 , he was a Lecturer in Music as well as an organist at the University of St Andrews. From 1988 until 2014, Kitchen was a Senior Lecturer in Music in the University of Edinburgh, teaching harmony counterpoint, keyboard techniques and historical performance techniques across all levels. Kitchen is an Fellowship Diploma (FRCO) from the Royal College of Organists, and is a Licentiate of Royal Academy of Music (LRAM).
