John (Joseph Vincent) Kessel (born on September 24 1950, in Buffalo, New York) is an American writer in the fields of science fiction as well as fantasy. He is an acclaimed short story writer and is his four novels on his own, Good News From Outer Space (1989), Corrupting Dr. Nice (1997), The Moon and the Other (2017) as well as Pride and Prometheus (2018) and one book, Freedom Beach (1985) in collaboration with his friend James Patrick Kelly. Kessel has a wife, the author Therese Anne Fowler.

The book “Stories for Men” shared the 2002 James Tiptree Jr. Award for science fiction that deals with gender issues in M. John Harrison’s book Light. He’s been nominated three times for the World Fantasy Award: 1993 for the Meeting in Infinity collection, 1999 for the short story “Every Angel is Terrifying” and in 2009 for the novella “Pride and Prometheus”.

In 1994, his play Faustfeathers was awarded his the Paul Green Playwrights’ Prize. In 2007, his short novel “A Clean Escape” (previously adapting by Kessel as a one-act piece from 1986) was adapting to a full-length play by Sam Egan for ABC’s science fiction anthology series Masters of Science Fiction.

Kessel earned the B.A. with a major in Physics in Physics and English in the University of Rochester in 1972 following which he earned an M.A. in English at the University of Kansas in 1974 in English and Physics, and in 1974, a Ph.D. in English from the University of Kansas in 1981 where he worked under scientist and writer James Gunn. Since 1982, Kessel has taught courses in American literature and science fiction as well as fantasy and fiction in writing on the campus of North Carolina State University, and also helped to establish an MFA Creative Writing program at NCSU in the role of the first director of the program.

Kessel received the Nebula Award in 1982 for his novella “Another Orphan”, in where the main character is living in the novel Moby-Dick and another for his novelette from 2008 “Pride and Prometheus”, which is a novelette that combines the stories from Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice and Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein. The novel also received the 2009 Shirley Jackson Award. The time between them were the longest time gap between the awards given to competitors in the history of Nebula. The brief story “Buffalo” won the Theodore Sturgeon Memorial Award as well as the Locus poll in 1992.

Kessel is also a widely published science fiction and fantasy critic. His works of criticism include the 2004 essay on Orson Scott Card’s novel Ender’s Game, “Creating the Innocent Killer: Ender’s Game, Intention, and Morality”. With Mark L. Van Name, Kessel created the Sycamore Hill Writer’s Workshop. Kessel has also edited, with Kelly, three collections of contemporary sf short stories, Feeling Very Strange: The Slipstream Anthology, Rewired: The Post- Cyberpunk Anthology, and The Secret History of Science Fiction.
