John Kefalas is one of the most popular and richest Politician who was born on December 26, 1954 in Piraeus, Attica, Greece. McCluskey’s campaign to unseat Kefalas was supported in McCluskey’s campaign was endorsed by the Denver Post, while Kefalas was supported in McCluskey’s campaign was endorsed by the Windsor Beacon and the Fort Collins Coloradoan. Kefalas eventually won another term, with 59 % of the popular vote and became one of the very first Democrat to be elected a second time for the eastern Fort Collins district since 1936.
From 1997 until 2004 Kefalas was a public policy advocate as well as a community development coordinator at Catholic Charities until his departure amid a controversy over his support of Roe v. Wade and abortion rights in his legislative campaign in 2004. Prior to his election to the legislature, Kefalas was the director of the Tax Fairness project of Colorado’s Progressive Coalition. He has been an officer of both the Fort Collins Housing Authority and the Colorado Social Legislation Committee, and in 2001, he was awarded the City of Fort Collins Human Relations Award.
Among Kefalas’ top priorities is restoring and expanding Colorado’s earned income tax credit, a move which met with resistance from legislative leaders in 2007 due to budget constraints. Kefalas introduced a bill in the 2008 session to restore Colorado’s EITC at ten percent of the federal credit, but the bill was defeated in a House committee.
Kefalas also sponsored a bill to authorize local pilot tests of ranked choice voting methods. Kefalas sponsored a bill to establish a Colorado Housing Investment Fund, but withdrew the bill when proponents moved forward with a similar ballot initiative. He later expressed frustration when plans for the ballot measure were withdrawn. Building on his 2007 bill to allow purchasing of “green” products, Kefalas also sponsored a measure to require Colorado governments to consider products’ expected life and cost of ownership in making purchasing decisions, which was signed into law.
Between 1980 and 1994, Kefalas made a decision to transfer a portion his federal income tax payments to charitable organizations in to protest United States military actions in Central America. He has paid all his income taxes in full from 1994, but he continued to protest against the federal phone excise tax until 2004. In the end, Kefalas has been enforcing a lien and his wages garnished. Kefalas has paid back his taxes and considers his action as a protest of conscience. He also wrote about his experiences with “war tax resistance” for the newsletter of the National War Tax Resistance Coordinating Committee. In both of his legislative campaigns in 2004 and 2006, Kefalas was accused of absconding from his federal tax obligation and was criticized by both his Republican opponent as well as by non-partisan political groups. Kefalas is also an outspoken critic of the Iraq War, and has taken part in civil disobedience without violence in protest against the war.

John Michael Kefalas (born December 26th 1954) is a politician from Colorado, the U.S. state of Colorado. A lobbyist and educator before beginning his run for the legislature in 2004. Kefalas defeated an incumbent Republican incumbent to be elected for the Colorado House of Representatives as a Democrat in 2006. Kefalas was elected for Senate District 14 in the State Senate in 2012 and was a member of Senate District 14 from 2012 until early in 2019. In the year 2018, Kefalas ran for and got a seat on the Larimer County Board of County Commissioners. He quit his Senate seat and a vacancy commission appointed Joann Ginal to replace him.
Born to Piraeus, Greece, Kefalas received a bachelor’s degree from botany at Colorado State University in 1978 after which he was a member of the Peace Corps in 1979, working as an Extension worker for El Salvador. When he returned in his home in the United States, he earned an advanced degree in teaching and the specialization in secondary science at Fairleigh Dickinson University in 1982 and was a teacher within the Poudre School District. He also served in the role of an employee counselor in Larimer County, Colorado, as well as an outreach worker in the field of health.
Kefalas first ran for the state legislature in 2004, winning the Democratic Party primary by only seven votes over Fort Collins councilman Bill Bertschy after a recount process that lasted for several weeks. Kefalas lost the general election by fewer than 500 votes to incumbent Republican Bob McCluskey in a race that also included Libertarian Party candidate Jassen Bowman. Kefalas ran unchallenged for the Democratic nomination in 2006, and narrowly prevailed over McCluskey in the general election.
