Byrne created RawStory.com and the site was first launched on February 1st in 2004. The site was initially designed as a more liberal version that was a liberal version of Drudge Report. The first few years of the site Raw Story focused on national security issues, American politics, and the reporting of anti-gay political leaders who were also closeted gays. Byrne started Raw Story when he was 23 years old. Byrne interviewed prominent politicians and writers of the time which included ex- House Judiciary Chairman John Conyers (D-MI) and historian Howard Zinn. His coverage also focused on the rights of citizens, with criticism of presidents George W. Bush and Barack Obama’s warrantless wiretapping policy. In 2010 Byrne quit as the Editor for Raw Story. He continues to be the company’s chief executive.
In 2015, Byrne began advocating for the promotion of pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) after a false positive HIV test. His first campaign on South Beach was covered by The Miami Herald, “I AM PrEP,” in November 2015, which involved posters created for bars and clubs and brochures for health centers. Byrne wrote an article about his in a long-form piece for The Atlantic in December,
- CBS News 4 Miami covered his PrEP advocacy in March 2017. Byrne is also an at-large board member of Arianna’s Center, a Ft. Lauderdale-based nonprofit focused on serving and empowering the transgender community in South Florida.
In 2017, Byrne founded an HIV prevention nonprofit, Prevention 305, which focuses specifically on linking Latinx immigrants to HIV prevention medication in the Miami, Florida area.
Byrne and Rogers identified as gay by numerous politicians and staffers who supported or voted against gay rights in the early 2000s. The first to be exposed was the former Republican congressman Ed Schrock (R-VA). Rogers and Byrne revealed that Schrock was once a snob about LGBT military members left two ads on an sexline for gay phones. Schrock quit on August 31, 2004 following the recording being made public and published online.
