On June 8 on the 8th of June, 2010 McIntyre was appointed an auxiliary Bishop of Philadelphia and the titular the bishop from Bononia in the presence of Pontiff Benedict XVI. His episcopal consecration was received in August 6th, 2010 by Cardinal Rigali at the Cathedral Basilica of SS. Peter and Paul. in a ceremony of joint participation in which Michael J. Fitzgerald was also appointed Auxiliary Bishop for Philadelphia. Auxiliary bishop Fitzgerald serves as the archdiocesan administrator and secretary of the Secretariat for Evangelization.
He was appointed Chaplain for His Holiness, in the year 2003 and was elevated to the title of Prelate of Honor in the year 2005. Apart from his role as archbishop’s secretary and the chaplain in the motherhouse for the Sisters of Mercy in Merion between 1999 and 2003.

He was also an official participant in the Council of Priests (1996-99) and the Admissions Board for St. Charles Borromeo Seminary (1997-99). From 1999 onwards, McIntyre has been secretary to the Archbishop of Philadelphia serving as the secretary for cardinals Anthony Bevilacqua (1999-2003) and Justin Francis Rigali (2003-10).
