He also appeared in the squad of United in a variety of European matches, including his 1983 and 1984 European Cup semi final and the 1987 UEFA Cup Final.
Also, he played at Dunfermline Athletic, Dundee and Forfar Athletic before becoming player-manager at Deveronvale and later Montrose. He also has managed Celtic Ladies as well as being a coach for Forfar, Dundee and Dundee United. Holt also spent a brief period as the interim manager of Montrose in the year 2016.
Holt was appointed manager of players at Deveronvale and later Montrose. Holt was back at Dundee United in the mid-1990s and served for several years in various coaching positions and then resigned in 2003, when Ian McCall was appointed manager. Holt was later promoted to a scout with Celtic working in the Dundee area before joining Dundee as a youth development coach. After May, 2012 Holt transferred to be an academy coach in Dundee United. In February of 2015 the assistant manager was promoted for a short period of time until the conclusion of the season Montrose as manager. He was also a the former United colleague Paul Hegarty. After warding off the possibility of being relegated to the Highland League in a two-leg play-off with Brora Rangers, Holt and Hegarty were able to accept their posts on a long-term basis. Both signed contracts for two years. Following Hegarty was fired in November of 2016, Holt was appointed caretaker manager of the club. Holt was dismissed by the club when Stewart Petrie was appointed permanent manager on December 4, 2016.
