John Healey (born 13 February 1960) is a British Labour Party politician serving as a Member of the Parliament (MP) in the constituencies of Wentworth and Dearne from 1997 and the Shadow Secretary of State of Defence until 2020.

Healey was married Jackie Bate on 25 October 1993 in Lambeth and they have a son. He is an active part of Amnesty International.

At the 1997 general election, Healey successfully contested the seat of Wentworth, which had become available following the retirement of the Labour MP Peter Hardy. Healey held the seat with a majority of 23,959 and has remained the MP to date, being re-elected in the 2019 General Election with a majority of 2,165.

Although John Healey had not been the first choice as the Labour candidate in Wentworth for the 1997 general election he won by a convincing margin after a long campaign. It was rumoured that the Labour leadership had tried to insert the former Conservative MP for Stratford-on-Avon, Alan Howarth, who had crossed the floor and joined the Labour Party in 1995.

His first attempt at politics as a politician was a failed attempt to win the Ryedale seat in the general election in 1992. He was He was the Labour campaigner, Healey finished in third spot, just 3007 votes less than the incumbent Conservative John Greenway.

John Healey was born in Wakefield The child of Aidan Healey OBE. He attended The Lady Lumley’s School in Pickering before going to the private St Peter’s School, York sixth form college. Healey was a student of the fields of Social and Political Science in Christ’s College, Cambridge where earned a BA in 1982. He was an editor and journalist as well as the deputy editor of The House Magazine, an internal publication that was published by The Palace of Westminster, The House Magazine for a period of one year in 1983. In 1984, he was an all-time disability rights activist with a number of national charity organizations.

Healey began working for Issues Communications in 1990 as campaign manager, before being director of communication for the Manufacturing, Science and Finance trade union in 1992. He was named the campaign director for the Trades Union Congress in 1994 where he remained till his appointment to his seat in the House of Commons. He was also a teacher for Open University Business School.
