Hastert was born on the 2nd of January 1942 at Aurora, Illinois, the oldest of three sons born to Naomi (nee Nussle) and Jack Hastert. From 1965 until 1981, Hastert worked as a high school instructor and coach for Yorkville High School located in Yorkville, Illinois. Hastert lost a 1980 Republican primary for the Illinois House of Representatives, but showed a talent for campaigning, and after the election, volunteered for an influential state senator, John E. Grotberg. In the summer of 1981, however, State Representative Al Schoeberiein had become terminally ill, and Republican party bosses selected Hastert as the successor over two major rivals, West Chicago lawyer Tom Johnson and Mayor Richard Verbic of Elgin. The first round of balloting resulted in a tie, but Hastert was chosen after Grotberg interceded on Hastert’s behalf.
Hastert was briefly a student at North Central College, but later transferred to Wheaton College, a Christian liberal arts college. Jim Parnalee, Hastert’s roommate at North Central who transferred with him to Wheaton is a Marine Corps Reserve member who in 1965 was the first student at Wheaton College who was killed during Vietnam. Hastert was able to continue to visit Parnalee’s family every the year while in Michigan. Due to a sprain in his wrestling Hastert was never a member of the military. He graduated in 1967 and earned his M.S. in education philosophy in 1967 from Northern Illinois University (NIU). In his first year at graduate school Hastert studied for the duration of three months studying on the streets of Japan within his People to People Students Ambassador Programme. One of the group’s participants included Tony Podesta (then the president of the Young Democrats at University of Illinois at Chicago Circle).

John Dennis Hastert (/”‘ h ae s t @r t/; born on January 2 1942) is an American politician from the past who served in the 14th congressional district of Illinois from 1987 until 2007 and was the 51st Speaker of the United States House of Representatives from 1999 until 2007. He was and was the longest-running Republican Speaker in the House in the history of the House. After being found guilty of financial crimes relating to numerous instances of child molestation, he was the most powerful politician to be in U.S. history to have completed a prison sentence.
Hastert worked for Yorkville Community Unit School District for 16 years between 1965 and 1981. Hastert began his work there at the age of 23, and continuing to attend NIU. In the years that followed, Hastert was a teacher in the classroom at Yorkville High School (teaching government economics, history as well as sociology) and also played football and as a wrestling coach.
