Stracey (born 22 September 1950) is a British former professional boxer who fought from 1969 until 1978. He was a former world champion in welterweight who been the holder of both WBC as well as the lineal title from 1975 between 1975 and 1976. On a regional scale He held his British and European world titles in the welterweight division between 1973 and 1975. He is listed as a result of BoxRec as the 8th-best British world welterweight of all time.
On the 27th of May 1974 Stracey was granted a shot to win the European Welterweight title. He took on Roger Menetrey at the Stade de Roland Garros situated in Paris, France. Stracey took the title via a knockout in the eighth round. On April 29, 1975, he won the European championship in a match against Max Hebeisen, at the Royal Albert Hall, winning by RTD in the sixth round.
On 20 March 1976 he retained the title against perennial world title challenger Hedgemon Lewis by a knockout in round ten, but on 22 June, at Wembley, he lost the world title, being knocked out in twelve rounds by California-based Mexican Carlos Palomino. In his next fight, he lost to future world title challenger Dave Boy Green, with a badly damaged eye in round ten. Stracey retired as a winner when he knocked out George Warusfel in nine rounds in Islington on 23 May 1978.
Stracey bought the Three Horseshoes pub in Briston, Norfolk, and renamed it the John H Stracey. In 2011 the pub reverted to its original name. He also had, at one point, a boxing school in London.
Stracey won five more times before being drawn against Marshall Butler, on 25 May 1972 in the Royal Albert Hall, suffering his first defeat , after being defeated by Butler in eight rounds. Then, he had a string of four wins, before he faced Bobby Arthur for the British Welterweight title on 31 October in the Royal Albert Hall. The fight ended in a controversial manner this time. Stracey was disqualified after round seven. Stracey was able to win five more fights in succession. On February 23, 1973 Stracey was in the United States, were he was a part of Danny McAloon on the undercard of the first Ali fight vs. Bugner fight, at the Las Vegas Convention Center, on February 14th. Stracey was victorious in the fight via an unanimous decision. Then he faced Bobby Arthur in a rematch on the 5th of June which he again won the British title via a fourth-round knockout.

Stracey was a member of Great Britain as a lightweight in the 1968 Summer Olympics. He was eliminated at the end of the 16th round by the eventual gold medalist Ronnie Harris. Stracey was the winner of his 1969 ABA light- welterweight title.
Stracey made his debut in the professional ring on September 17, 1969 and knocked off Santos Martins in two rounds. Stracey had a win in his first twelve fights, 11 by knockout and against a lesser-known opponent. The thirteenth fight was with Teddy Cooper, on 19 January 1971. Cooper was not a popular boxer either however, the fight was a controversial one as Stracey beat him by an early disqualification in the fifth round. Five October 1971, Stracey was able to draw (tied) in 10 rounds with Frankie Lewis.
During the 1970s, it was a common practice to give world title shots to boxers that held continental titles. For example, the OPBF (Oriental Pacific Boxing Federation) champion would be given priority over other challengers for world title fights. Stracey was not the exception, and, after winning five more fights in a row (including a win over Ernie Lopez), he received his first world title shot: challenging WBC welterweight champion José Nápoles, in Nápoles’ home-town of Mexico City, Mexico, on 6 December 1975. Stracey was sent down in round one, but he recuperated to close Nápoles’ eye and have referee Octavio Meyran stop the fight in the sixth round, Stracey winning the world championship by a technical knockout. The new champion declared, “He [Nápoles] could have knocked me down in every round but I’d have won it anyway”. It was Nápoles’ last fight.
