John Allen Denny (born November 8th 1952) is a American professional right-handed baseball pitcher who was a part of Major League Baseball (MLB) for the St. Louis Cardinals, Cleveland Indians, Philadelphia Phillies as well as the Cincinnati Reds, from 1974 until 1986. Denny won the National League (NL) Cy Young Award, in 1983.
Denny had arm issues at the end of his career. In 1983, he played two additional seasons living in Philadelphia prior to being sold again, this time to Cincinnati. He was 11-10 in 1986 before he retired from baseball.
Denny was rehabilitation coach for the Arizona Diamondbacks organization from 2001-2004.
Denny was also a good pitcher during 1978. He was 14-11, with the 2.96 ERA, but he was a disaster in 1979 and was dealt to Cleveland. He continued to be inconsistent for the Indians in the Indians’ lineup, pitching 24-23 over three seasons. He threw three shutouts in a row at the end of 1981 and was awarded the three-year, $2million contract following the season. After nine months the team traded him with the Phillies.

Denny was born in Prescott, Arizona and attended Prescott High School. He excelled in sports at Prescott High School in basketball and football in addition to baseball. In the draft for amateurs in 1970 He was picked by the Cardinals in the 29th round. Denny began his career in the year at 17. Denny played with the Triple-A Tulsa Oilers in 1974 and was 9-8, with an 3.75 Earned Run Average. He made his debut in the major leagues in September.
The following year, Denny started back in Tulsa but he was able to pitch well, and soon joined his place in the St. Louis starting rotation. The year 1976 was the one that Denny was able to have a breakthrough season. He was the top pitcher in his team in the National League in ERA at 2.52 and was also the top pitcher for the team. Due to a lack of run support his record was 11-9.
In 1983, Denny enjoyed the best season of his career, going 19-6 with a 2.37 ERA. He topped the NL in wins and winning percentage and was second in ERA. He also led the Phillies to the NL championship. In that year’s Cy Young Award voting, he received 20 of 24 first-place votes to win going away.
