John Cioffi (born November 7 1956) was an American electrical engineer, teacher as well as inventor, who made significant contributions to the theory of telecommunication systems particularly in the field of the area of information theory and coding theory. Most notably, he is known by the title “the father of DSL,” Cioffi’s groundbreaking research contributed to making Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) technology practical . It has resulted in more than 400 papers and more than 100 patents that are pending or granted and patents, many of which are licensed.

In 1991 at the age 35 Cioffi took a sabbatical to leave Stanford to establish Amati Communications Corporation. His goal was to develop DSL modems that were based on studies he and his fellow students conducted. Many of Cioffi’s former and former students went with him to Amati in the building of the Prelude modem that was an DSL modem capable of transmitting six megabits or more per second across 9,000 feet of telephone line. The Prelude modem was later to win what is now popularly known as “Bellcore ADSL Olympics” in 1993, when it performed significantly superior to modems using single carrier modulation methods, like quadrature amplified modulation (QAM) and carrierless amplified phase modulation (CAP) as well as modems made by AT&T as well as Bellcore. Millions of people currently use DSL built on the Amati’s inventions.

In 2003, Cioffi founded Adaptive Spectrum and Signal Alignment, Inc. (ASSIA) to help service providers realize improvements in the performance and profitability of their DSL networks. Today ASSIA’s customers collectively provide DSL service to more than 70 million subscribers worldwide.

In 2009, Cioffi assumed emeritus status at Stanford, as the Hitachi Professor Emeritus of Engineering. He is now CEO and Chairman of ASSIA.

The year 1986 was when Cioffi started his career in teaching by becoming an associate professor in electronic engineering, in the electrical engineering department at Stanford University. Cioffi directed his Ph.D. programs of more than 70 students over the span over two years. The work of his and students’ studies into the subject of discrete multitone moder (DMT) was widely used as a digital subscriber line (DSL) technology.
