Burnside’s work is influenced by his fascination with the environment, nature and ecological issues. The book of stories for short, Something Like Happy, was released in 2013.

Burnside has also been the writer of two short stories collections, Burning Elvis (2000) as well as Something Like Happy (2013) and a number of novels which include The Dumb House (1997), The Devil’s Footprints, (2007), Glister, (2009) and A Summer of Drowning, (2011). The multi-award-winning memoir of his, A Lie About My Father was released in 2006, and the sequel Waking Up in Toytown in the year 2010. A second memoir, I Put a Spell On You, combined his personal stories with reflections on romance, magic, and pop music. The short stories as well as feature essays have appeared in a variety of journals and magazines which include The New Yorker, The Guardian and The London Review of Books as well as other publications. He also writes a regular nature column for the New Statesman. In 2011, he was awarded the Petrarca-Preis the most prestigious German international literary award.
