He was involved with the British Touring Car Championship as team owner and driver.
He is team manager for his team, the Bintcliffe Sport team, based on the Barr Lane estate in York 1. He has raced Paul O’Neill in the MGF Cup and racing with the BTCC’s Class B during the year 2000 (with Rob Collard among their drivers) and in the BTCC’s Class B Production Class in 2001. They also raced Jason Plato and Darren Manning in ASCAR.

He was a participant for his first British Touring Car Championship for Audi from 1996 until 1998. He was in the same team with the series winners Frank Biela and Yvan Muller. Because of Audi’s Quattro 4-wheel drive system Audi initially had the top car. And despite the lack of experience, John was able twice to be seventh in the competition, securing two wins in races against prominent drivers. The team was unable to perform in 1998 in the championship, as John placed 15th, just ahead of the independent championship winner Tommy Rustad. It could be a skewed review of John due to his teammate Muller’s achievements; the same year, Frank Biela only mustered 14th spot within this German similar series which was run by the same two-wheel drive Audi.
John returned to racing in 2011 racing in an Audi R8 LMS in the British GT championship for United Autosports.
