Benton began curling in the year 1975, and he won the first U.S. Junior National Championship in 1987. He has participated in the United States Men’s Championship ten times, the first time in 1997.
In 1991, Benton was selected for his first Olympic Trials but failed to be able to compete in the Games. Benton would then participate at the Olympic Trials two more times in 1997 and 2005, and then win the fourth time around in 2009. Benton’s team was victorious at the 2009 Trials which secured them a spot to represent in the United States at the 2010 Vancouver Olympic Games as well as the 2009 World Championship, since the Trials were also the National Championship. Benton was the leader of the team, which comprised John Shuster (skip), Jason Smith (third), and Jeff Isaacson (second). Chris Plys joined the team as an alternate after the Olympic Trials.
At the 2017 United States Men’s Championship Benton played second for Todd Birr. Team Birr earned a silver medal, losing to Team John Shuster in the final.
