In 2010 she was elected vice-president in the Assembly of European Regions. Following the resignation of vice-chancellor as well as OVP Party leader Josef Proll, the Faymann cabinet was changed and Johanna Mikl-Leitner was inaugurated as Austria’s minister of interior on April 21, 2011.

Johanna Mikl-Leitner was a part the Austrian national council since the 29th of October 1999 (1999-10-29 ) until April 18 2003 (2003-04-18 ) and was a member of the OVP. On March 24, 2003, she was appointed an official member of the government provincial (Landesratin) in Lower Austria.
