Johanna Matintalo is one of the most popular and richest Cross-Country Skier who was born on December 11, 1996 in Pöytyä, Southwest Finland, Finland. Johanna Katariina Matintalo (born 11 December 1996) is a Finnish cross-country skier, as well as a former athletes in track and field. She established Finnish age-group records when she was an intermediate distance runner. She was also the national female champion at the 800 meter race in

2013. However, the results were slowed by injuries and stagnation. This led her to pursue skiing. In her ski career she was awarded silver medals in the women’s skiing event at the 2017 World U23 Championships and represented Finland at the 2017 World Championships.

Matintalo was selected to compete in January’s World Cup races in Otepaa in place of Riitta-Liisa Roponen who suffered an injury to her back that ended her season. Matintalo was a standout in the race, finishing a surprising excellent 12th in the 10km classicalrace. She was the second-highest Finn after Krista Parmakoski. She beat the mainstays of the national team Kerttu Niskanen, Aino-Kaisa Saarinen Laura Mononen, Anne Kyllonen. In the wake of her performance she was added on the Finnish team for the 2017 FIS Nordic World Ski Championships in Lahti, Finland; her debut at the championships was in the 15km skiathlon, where she was 29th.

Higher levels of competition, heightened incompatibility between skiing and running meant it was impossible for Matintalo to pursue both sports over a long period of time In her capacity as a skier, she required a lot stronger upper body strength, which would translate into an additional weight that could hinder her progress as an athlete. At the end of 2016, Matintalo made the decision to pursue skiing, but with the intention of pursuing athletics and moved from her hometown, Poytya in southwestern Finland in southwestern Finland, to Rovaniemi in northern Finland for improved training facilities. The move was a success, since she enjoyed a great year in 2016-17. At the 2017 World Junior Championships in Park City she took silver in the women’s under-23 skiathlon, despite having injury to her ankle.
