Professor Schot’s current research is focused on the historical and conceptualisation of Deep Transitions. These are longer-term changes that change the way society and the economy operate. This is the case with the First Deep Transition started in 1750, and led to the creation of an welfare system. It was followed by the Second Deep Transition started somewhere in the 1970s, and is currently transforming modernity and capitalism as we recognize it. Based on the ideas from Christopher Freeman and Carlota Perez It is the goal to create a new Version of the Multilevel perspective (MLP) of sustainability transitions, which can understand the dynamics and nature that are associated with Deep Transitions. Professor Schot will also employ this theory to provide insight into the governance of new pathways for transition.

In 2014 the series was awarded the famous Freeman Award by the European Association for the Study of Science and Technology (EASST). It is a prestigious award. Freeman Award is given in appreciation of a publication which is a major collective contribution to the interplay of research in science and technology in the field of research on innovation. The award is made by EASST to honor Chris Freeman, founder of SPRU.

Johan Schot’s work has greatly benefited from an emphasis on creative collaborations across borders and disciplines which open up innovative new research agendas. He has created and pioneered large scale collaborations, in which many (up to 100 or more) scholars and practitioners from business, government and societal groups work productively together. Initiatives such as the Greening of Industry Network and the influential Dutch Knowledge Network for System Innovations and Transitions have all successfully enabled the development of innovative new insights and transformative practices. More recently, the Tensions of Europe collaboration of up to 300 scholars resulted in the dynamic ‘Inventing Europe’ digital history project, delivered in partnership with ten cultural heritage institutions and museums. This transnational collaboration also led to a unique book series, called ‘Making Europe’, which provides new interpretations of European History through the lens of technology.

The book, which combines the findings that were originally presented in seven volumes that were published in the Netherlands and draws on the notion of contemporary debate as an overall concept to comprehend Dutch technological past. Modernizers in Dutch society, including managers, engineers architects, engineers, and more –did have a difficult time deciding ways to advance their careers; furthermore the ambiguity of certain methods often impeded or delayed implementation. Conflicts between top-down and bottom-up modernization, as well as between the expansion of scale and more flexible arrangements of coordination and cooperation created the foundation for Dutch the history of the country. The chapters explore such subjects as the attempts to build an industrial society, the creation of new infrastructures, the emergence of mass production, and the rise of a consumer society and the land-use plan in a low- lying nation.
