On January 14, 2011 the politician advocated for an extensive autonomous status for Flanders. He said that the N-VA as well as the CD&V correctly refused to take a shaky compromise regarding the difficult formation of a government following the federal elections on 13 June 2010.

In 2014, he ran for office in the Flemish elections for Limburg, but was not elected. Since June 30, 2014, he can call himself honorary Flemish representative. That title was awarded by the Bureau (executive committee) of the Flemish Parliament.

The minister was forced to resign in May of 2001. had to quit as minister after it was discovered that he had attended the anniversary celebrations of the Sint-Maartensfonds which is an organisation of the Flemish Eastern Front Fighters, which he was a part of for more than a quarter of a century. He was replaced in the position of minister Paul Van Grembergen [nl] . This incident accelerated the demise of the People’s Union. Following the resignation of his position as Flemish minister He was a minister again as a member of the Flemish Parliament. Following the dissolution of the People’s Union in the autumn of 2001 (December 20) He was then transferred into the Christian democratic CD&V. In the Flemish elections held on June 13th 2004, and June 7 in 2009, he returned to the Flemish Parliament from the constituency of Limburg. On November 23, 2005, Trees Merckx-VanGoey (NL) were recognized for their 20 years of parliamentary service at an plenary session of the Flemish Parliament.
