Johannes Wijnandus “Johan” Remkes (born 15 June 1951) is a Dutch politician from the People’s Party for Freedom and Democracy (VVD) and a businessman. He has been the interim mayor of The Hague since 12 October 2019.
He was appointed Minister of Interior as well as Kingdom Relations as well as Deputy Prime Minister during the First Balkenende cabinet. Following the demise of his cabinet continued to be in the position of Minister for Interior as well as Kingdom Relations during the Third and Second Balkenende Cabinets, however he was appointed Vice Prime Minister VVD Chairman Gerrit Zalm. He was Minister for the Interior as well as Kingdom Relations starting the 22nd of July 2002 to 22 February 2007 and was Vice Prime Minister starting from the 22nd of July 2002 until the 27th of May 2003.

After his retirement Remkes occupies numerous seats as a corporate director and nonprofit director for supervisory boards in the business and industry world and several international non-governmental organizations and research institutes (Martini Hospital, Verwey-Jonker Institute and the Parliamentary Documentation Center).
In 2018, he made known he would step down from the position in January 2019 to definitely retire from politics. He will be succeeded by former Haarlemmermeer alderman Arthur van Dijk.
Remkes was elected a member of the House of Representatives after the resignation of Nell Gingjaar-Maas becoming a member on the 26th of October 1993. After the 1998 election, Remkes was appointed the State Secretary of Housing and Spatial Planning and Environment within the cabinet Kok II, taking office on August 3rd, 1998. It was the Cabinet Kok II resigned on 16 April 2002 in response to the findings in the NIOD report on the Srebrenica massacre of the Bosnian War and continued to be a demissionary. Following the 2002 elections, Remkes returned as a member of the House of Representatives, taking office on May 23, 2002. After the formation of the Cabinet in 2002, Remkes was appointed the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior as well as Kingdom Relations within the cabinet Balkenende I. He was appointed on the 22nd of July, 2002. It was announced that the cabinet Balkenende I came into effect 4 months after on the 16th of October 2002, and continued serving in a demissionary role. Following the elections of 2003, Remkes was elected as a member of the House of Representatives, taking office on January 30, 2003. In the aftermath of the cabinet’s formation in 2003, Remkes was appointed minister of Interior as well as Kingdom Relations for the cabinet Balkenende II, and was appointed on the 27th of May, 2003. Balkenende II was the Cabinet. Balkenende II ended its term on June 30, 2006, and was subsequently re-elected as a demissionary up until its replacement with the Caretaker Cabinet Balkenende III, with Remkes continuing as minister of Interior as well as Kingdom Relations. He was appointed on July 7, 2006. Following the 2006 election, Remkes returned to office as an elected member of the House of Representatives, taking his office on the 30th of November. Cabinet Balkenende III Cabinet Balkenende III replaced his successor, the Cabinet Balkenende IV after the cabinet was formed in 2007 on the 22nd of February and he continued to sit as a frontbencher in the House of Representatives as a frontbencher. In March of 2010, Remkes declared that he would not run for office in 2010 and remained in office until the conclusion of the term as a parliamentary member on June 17, 2010.
