Verbeke was appointed to his position in Belgian Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1981. Verbeke served within the Ministry as the Director General’s Deputy in charge of Political Affairs, as well as as the Vice Chief of Mission for Washington, D.C.. In the meantime he has been in charge of the Cabinet Chef for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Verbeke is the permanent ambassador from Belgium in Belgium’s permanent representative to the United Nations and to its Security Council. He was for a short time as the UN Special Coordinator for Lebanon and was an United Nations Secretary General’s representative in Lebanon. As the permanent representative to Belgium at the United Nations, he presented his credentials to the United Nations Secretary-General on 16 September 2004. Later, Verbeke was the Secretary-General’s Special Representative and Head of the UN Observer Mission in Georgia (UNOMIG) in 2008-09.
Verbeke holds a Master of Laws (LL.M.) from the Yale Law School and a Diplôme d’Etudes Supérieures Européennes (D.E.S.) from the Université de Nancy.
