Adam Joseph “Joey” Goebel III (born 2 September 1980) is an American writer whose work revolves on the uniqueness of the culture of Middle America. He was born in Henderson, Kentucky, a small town along the Ohio River across from Evansville, Indiana. Parents, Adam Goebel of Louisville as well as Nancy Bingemer Goebel of Henderson were both social workers. They they met the other in Frankfort, Kentucky. CeCe is his older sibling. CeCe is also an social worker.

In the fall of 2005, Torture the Artist was published in German under the name Vincent from Diogenes Verlag, a Swiss literary publisher. Goebel was a participant at this year’s Frankfurt Book Fair, and Vincent along with Vincent were published by Der Spiegel.

From 1996 until 2001; before becoming writer, Goebel sang and played guitar in a punk group known as The Mullets with band members Jason Sheeley and Justin Hope. The band performed around 100 shows across in the Midwest (many of them in Evansville, Indiana) and released two cassette tapes and a seven-inch EP album and three Compact Discs.

MacAdam/Cage Publishing of San Francisco published Goebel’s first novel The Anomalies in April 2003. The Anomalies was an Book Sense 76 title selected by independent bookshops across the country which was also nominated to the Kentucky Literary Award. Goebel’s sequel novel, Torture the Artist, was published in October 2004 as well as by MacAdam/Cage. Torture the Artist was the finalist for the 2004 Kentucky Literary Award and made the list of long- list candidates for The Dylan Thomas Prize for 2006.

Goebel currently lives in Kentucky, with wife Micah. Goebel’s third novel, Commonwealth, was published on July 4, 2008.
