Joel Andrew Fitzgibbon (born 16 January 1962) is an Australian politician and Australian Labor Party (ALP) member of the Australian House of Representatives since March 1996. He represents the Division of Hunter in New South Wales. Fitzgibbon is a member of The ALP’s Centre Unity faction in NSW. From December 2007 to June 2009 he was the Minister for Defence in the First Rudd Ministry. He resigned from the cabinet in June 2009 following several controversies. In July 2013 after Kevin Rudd’s election as Labor Leader and his appointment as the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry in the second Rudd Ministry.
In 2008, Fitzgibbon expressed his displeasure with the unclassified information which he was given on an assessment of Joint Strike Fighter (JSF). He then requested an unclassified report which addressed his concerns and then expressed his confidence with his faith in the JSF project. in the interview, he denied having any personally involved in the Australian Federal Police (AFP) raids on the home that was owned by Canberra Times’ journalist Philip Dorling, but he did not confirm that his agency had not made contact with the AFP. Dorling has been accused of having received secret cabinet documents intended for Fitzgibbon.
On 26 March 2009, Fairfax Media reported that officers in the Department of Defence had conducted a covert and unauthorised investigation into Fitzgibbon’s friendship with a Chinese-Australian businesswoman in the belief that it constituted a security risk. This was alleged to have included officers from the Defence Signals Directorate accessing the computer network in Fitzgibbon’s office to obtain the woman’s bank details. The Department launched an urgent inquiry into the reports. Nick Warner, the Department’s Secretary, stated that he had not seen any information to confirm the claims and that there were no circumstances in which secret investigations into Ministers could be authorised. Fitzgibbon was reported to be “furious” about the investigation, and suggested that it may have been conducted by officials opposed to his reforms to the Australian Defence Organisation.
In May 2009, Fitzgibbon announced a new defence white paper titled Defending Australia in the Asia Pacific Century: Force 2030.

Joel Fitzgibbon was born in Bellingen, New South Wales He is the son of the late Eric Fitzgibbon who was the MP from Hunter 1984-96. Before he entered politics, Fitzgibbon was an auto electrician electorate officer, a technical education lecturer part-time and small business owner. He was an elected part of the Cessnock City Council in the period between 1987 and 1995.
Joel’s father Eric Fitzgibbon had retired prior to the 1996 election. Joel took home the Labor preselected for the seat. Hunter is among the few strongholds in the country of Labor that is in Labor hands for a long time, without interruption, since 1910. While Joel Fitzgibbon was stung by an eight- point loss in the 1996 election but he has been elected without difficulty since that time, with the sole only exception of the election in 2013 in which his margin was drastically diminished. In the election, he was elected the shadow cabinet in October 1998, and was named the Shadow Minister of Mining, Energy and Forestry in 2003-2005. In June 2005, he became appointed shadow assistant treasurer as well as the shadow minister for revenue as well as for competition and small businesses. In the early months of December 2006, after Kevin Rudd became leader of the opposition party, Fitzgibbon was appointed as the shadow defence minister. He was later named defence minister when Labor was elected to office in the elections in 2007.
Fitzgibbon resigned as Minister for Defence on 4 June 2009 after admitting that meetings held between his brother Mark Fitzgibbon, the head of the health fund NIB, and Defence officials concerning business opportunities had breached the Ministerial Code of Conduct.

In the 2019 federal election, Fitzgibbon suffered a 9.5-point swing against him in his electorate, reducing his margin to just 3 points. After the election, he was a vocal critic of his party’s direction, claiming that “Labor must reconnect with its blue-collar base and get back to the centre”. He stated that he was considering running in the leadership ballot if other candidates do not “show more interest in regional Australia”. He later endorsed Anthony Albanese as leader, who won unopposed.
