Joseph Gregory Randa (/”‘ r ae n d @ / ; born on December 18 1969) is an ex- Major League Baseball player. He played primarily as an infielder during his playing career. His nickname was “The Joker” due to his appearance resembling the character from comic books of Batman and his perpetual smile, particularly when he was on the plate. The nickname was given his name through Tony Muser, the Kansas City Royals manager in the second time Randa was with the club. The reason for this was Muser having to answer a constant stream of questions regarding what was the reason Randa always seemed to smile. “I’d tell them that’s not a smile, it’s his normal look”, Muser explained.
The Royals acquired Randa in the 1998 season. He was made an all-time third baseman at the beginning of his professional career for the first time, Randa scored .314 in 84 RBIs and 16 home runs. He established himself as a run- producing player at mid-range of the line and a reliable third baseman who was a fielder. As of 2003 Randa established his Kansas City Royals record for the longest consecutive games without errors by third basemen, having played 75 games without committing an error. When the 2004 season came to an end, Randa signed with the Cincinnati Reds as a free agent. The Reds won on Opening Day, Randa hit the game-winning homer in the 9th inning in the bottom for Cincinnati winning 7-6. On the 23rd of July in 2005 Randa had been traded to San Diego Padres for pitchers Justin Germano and Travis Chick. He was signed by the Pirates on December 28, 2005, for one-year contracts that was worth between $3.5 to $4 million. On September 22nd, Randa ended Padres Chris Young’s no-hit attempt with a pinch-hit homer in the 9th innings. In the ninth inning, the Padres are the sole baseball team in MLB history that has not had an unhit, at the conclusion of the season of 2019. On the 2nd of November of the 2nd of November, 2006 Randa declared his resignation. He hit .284/.339/.426 with 739 RBIs and 123 HRs in 1,522 games during 12 seasons.
Randa made his debut and sole playoff appearance in the 2005 season with the Padres in 2005, slamming .364 over three outings.

Randa made his first major league appearance in 1995 for his team, the Kansas City Royals, playing in 34 games.
