Joseph Bennet “Joe” Jacobi (born on September 26th 1969 Washington, D.C.) is an American former canoeist in the slalom category who was a competitor between the mid-1980s and the mid-2000s. Participating in two Summer Olympics and winning an Olympic gold medal in the C2 event in Barcelona in 1992.

Jacobi was an analyst on NBC Sports coverage of Canoeing during the 2007 Summer Olympics.

His gold medal was stolen out of his backpack in Atlanta, Georgia; it was found in 2016.

Jacobi began canoeing at the age of seven at a morning camp that was held in Maryland. Growing up on the Potomac River, Jacobi took his skills to the world stage and participated in 20 different nations with the goal of winning Whitewater National Championships in Australia and Chile, Costa Rica, the Czech Republic, Costa Rica, Chile, and the U.S. Jacobi won the C2 U.S. National Championship for five consecutive years (1988-1992) and placed second overall for the C1 Champion International Whitewater series in 1991 and 1995 (he was also fourth in the year 1992, and was third in 1994.).

Jacobi was a part of the United States’ canoe team during the 1992 Barcelona Olympics and competed at the C2 Slalom race. Jacobi and his teammate Scott Strausbaugh captured the gold medal, becoming the first American team in Olympic history to win the gold medal in the whitewater slalom. Jacobi was second in the single canoe category during the 2000 Olympic Trials and was an alternate for the American team. He was not a participant in Sydney. Following the year 2000 Jacobi kept competing on a high-level, winning his first U.S. Championship in 2002 and finished 9th in the 2003 World Championships with teammate Matt Taylor. As of 2000, Jacobi received the title of Paddler of the Century’ by Paddler Magazine. On the 15th of December the 15th of December 2001 Jacobi held the Olympic torch across Nashville, Tennessee as it traveled toward Salt Lake City, Utah to participate in the 2002 Winter Games. Jacobi said, “With the recent challenges confronting our society, the upcoming Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City not only offer a tremendous element of healing for our country, but also a source of inspiration for the entire world.”
