Joseph Thomas Hesketh (born February 15th 1959) was a former pitcher from Major League Baseball who played from 1984 to 1994 with the Montreal Expos (1984-90), Atlanta Braves (1990) and Boston Red Sox (1990-94). At 6′ 2″ 170 pounds. Hesketh batted and threw left handed. He was picked to his team the Expos in the draft of 1980 from The State University of New York in Buffalo.
In his 11-season professional period, Hesketh posted a 60-47 record and an 3.78 ERA in 339 appearances which included 114 starts with four complete games. 2 shutouts and 79 games completed with seven26 strikes, 21 saves 378 walks and 961 1/3 innings.
Hesketh is a member of both the UB Athletic Hall of Fame (Class of ’86) as well as the Greater Buffalo Sports Hall of Fame (2002). In 2006, he was named the Bulls’ pitching coach by head coach Ron Torgalski. His tenure with the UB Bulls ended after the 2007–2008 season.
In 1991, Hesketh returned from numerous seasons plagued by injuries. He posted a record of 12-4 over 39 games with Boston with 17 starts and a second-best 153 1/3 inning, in which his .750 percent won-loss rate beat all other American League pitchers. in 1984 Hesketh earned the title of the American Association pitcher of the year following a 12-3 season with an 3.05 ERA and 135 strikeouts in 147 1/3 innings with The Indianapolis Indians. He signed with in the Montreal Expos late in the season, and finished with an ERA of 2-2 and 1.80 ERA in 11 appearances. His first start in August 7, against his former team the Philadelphia Phillies was unusual, because he was tagged for a balk prior to when the first pitch was delivered. In 1985, he went 10-5 and had an 3.29 ERA in 25 starts and allowed only 125 hits over the record-setting 155 1/3 innings until the end of August. However, an accident at home plate caused him to break his leg, and the season was ended. He was a candidate for the National League Rookie of the Year award. In 1986, he was plagued due to an impinging nerve on the left shoulder. He was absent for the majority of 1987. Although Hesketh was able to bounce back some degree as a relief but he was never fully recovered.
Hesketh was dismissed by Montreal in the month of April, 1990. A minimum of a dozen teams contacted him, but He ended up in Atlanta due to the Braves their poor record. In the end, even though he scored five saves, Braves let him go after 31 games. Again, he was not off the field for long as his team, the Boston Red Sox quickly signed the player in July.
One of the most dominant pitchers in UB history, Hesketh compiled an overall 1.77 ERA, including a notable 0.91 during his junior season. He also had 10 complete games for the Buffalo Bulls and pitched one of the greatest wins in school history – a 4–0 shutout against powerful St. John’s team and future major league star Frank Viola. Hesketh also picked up the save in a victory on the road over nationally ranked University of Miami. In 1979, he played collegiate summer baseball with the Cotuit Kettleers of the Cape Cod Baseball League. After that, he earned the 1980 ECAC New York-New Jersey District Player of the Year honors, as his six shutouts for the Bulls remain a school record.
