Joseph Michael Ansolabehere (born June 18th 1959) is an American animator and screenwriter. He co-created Recess as well as Lloyd in Space with partner and his friend Paul Germain; they form the group Paul & Joe Productions. He also served as the chief story editor for all the initial 65 episodes on Rugrats and was also an editor and co-producer for the first season of Hey Arnold!.
He was employed by Disney Jr. from 2011 until 2017, writing the scripts for the Sheriff Callie’s Wild West and Miles From Tomorrowland and story editing in the initial season of Goldie and Bear.
Ansolabehere has a daughter, Jean, who is also a writer. His son Hugo was born in 2013. Ansolabehere is married to the costume designer Dorotka Sapinska.
In the year 1990, Ansolabehere began working on Rugrats beginning together with Viksten before moving independently. He was eventually among the very first story editor heads of the show. In his time the show was awarded many Emmys and became a major success for Nickelodeon.

In the 1980s, Ansolabehere collaborated together with Steve Viksten to write screenplays. Together, they produced and sold several comedy screenplays. These included Surfin CIA, Exterminators, Crooked Affair, and Sitting Ducks. The scripts they wrote were not ever made into films, and by the time the 1980s were over Ansolabehere began working with his colleagues in Rhythm and Hues as a producer of computer-generated animations predominantly for commercials. While working for R&H, Ansolabehere was contacted by a friend of his of his from UCLA, Paul Germain. Germain was the co-creator of (with Arlene Klasky and Gabor Csupo) and sold the TV show Rugrats to Nickelodeon and was searching for writers.
Ansolabehere later teamed up together with Paul Germain to create Recess for Disney. Recess’s Recess playground was inspired by Ansolabehere’s and Germain’s personal elementary school experiences as well as the characters that were all based on the friends they had in the past. The show was ABC’s biggest Saturday morning sensation of the 1990s’ final years. The show spawned a feature-length movie, Recess: School’s Out that Ansolabehere and Germain created and produced in 2001.
With Germain, Ansolabehere also created and produced the animated series Lloyd in Space for Disney, and developed and produced the show Pound Puppies for The Hub, receiving the 2012 Humanitas Award for the episode “I Never Barked For My Father”.
